Use Interactive Forms to Build Customer Retention Surveys and Drive Loyalty

MHC Team  May 13th, 2025

Today’s consumers have more options than ever before in virtually every area of products and services. That raises the stakes for businesses to not only attract new customers, but also keep their existing customers satisfied. Research shows that your business has at best a 20% chance of selling to a new customer, compared to a 60-70% chance of selling the same product to an existing customer.

Asking the right customer loyalty survey questions can have a major impact on your customer retention rates. By understanding why your customers make the decision to purchase from you, your business can tailor your communications and processes to deliver what they need when they need it.

Why Are Customer Loyalty Surveys
Crucial in 2025?

Who really knows what customers want these days? The customers, that’s who! Consumers are your single most reliable source of data on how to improve your products, services, and processes. Encouraging feedback and engagement is your best path to improving your operations, meeting customer expectations, and building brand loyalty.

People today have an unprecedented range of choices. Your customers expect hyper-personalized communications delivered via whatever channel they prefer. That includes taking into account different languages, tones, and even generational preferences. That makes it all the more important to develop a customer retention survey questionnaire that offers real insights.

What Is the Purpose of a
Customer Retention Survey?

There are as many explanations for customer loyalty as there are customers. Everyone has their own individual preferences and needs. The primary goal of a customer loyalty survey questionnaire is to solicit feedback that delivers insights into what they do and do not like about your products and services. It’s also an indispensable tool for understanding what processes your customers would like to be different and what changes you can make to improve customer experience.

Answering customer retention survey questions also helps engage your audience. Staying in contact with customers and periodically checking up on their needs is an excellent way to strengthen the relationships that will retain them for the long term.

Customer Retention vs Customer Loyalty

What is the difference between customer retention and customer loyalty? The two terms are often used interchangeably, but there are some subtle distinctions. By definition, customer retention is a broader metric. Your customer retention rate simply records the number of customers who give you repeat business over a certain period. That’s important data to track, although its insights are fairly basic.

Customer loyalty, on the other hand, looks more deeply at the relationship between your business and its customers. Customer loyalty survey results reveal important insights as to why customers continue to engage with your business and what you can do to improve their experience. Loyal customers are not only likely to purchase from you regularly, but also to advocate for your brand with other potential customers.

Examples of Customer Survey Questions

We’ve established how important asking the right customer loyalty survey questions can be. But how do you know what the right questions really are? While specific needs will vary for every business, these customer survey question examples will strengthen your understanding of how to drive both customer retention and loyalty.

What Are the Best Customer KPIs to Track?

Before creating a customer survey, you’ll need to decide what data you want to collect. Setting key performance indicators (KPIs) enables you to assess customer relationships and decide on the most useful information you can gather from a customer loyalty survey. Examples of insightful customer retention and loyalty KPIs include:

10 Customer Retention KPIs

1. Customer Retention Rate (CRR)

To find your Customer Retention Rate (CRR), calculate the percentage of customers who remain with your business over a specific period of time.
Customer Retention Rate Formula: ((E – N) / S) x 100

  • E = Customers at end of time period
  • N = New customers during time period
  • S = Customers at start of time period

2. Rate of Churn

To find your Rate of Churn, calculate the percentage of customers who leave or stop doing business with you over a specific period of time.
Churn Rate Formula: (Lost Customers / Total Customers at Start) x 100

3. Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT)

To find your Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT), analyze data based on responses to questions about customer satisfaction. For example, “How satisfied are you with your recent purchase?”

4. Customer Effort Score (CES)

To find your Customer Effort Score (CES), analyze data that tracks how easy it is for customers to use your services or resolve issues. For example, “How long did it take our customer support team to contact you?”

5. Repeat Purchase Rate

To find your Repeat Purchase Rate, calculate the percentage of your customers who make purchases from you more than once over a specific period of time.

6. Purchase Frequency Rate

To find your Purchase Frequency Rate, calculate the average time between purchases made by the same customer.
